5. Schorsch

Heute habe ich Schorsch getroffen. Eine sehr sympathische Person, mit der es Spaß macht, sich zu unterhalten. Die Themen scheinen nicht auszugehen, die Zeit vergeht wie im Flug. Wir verabreden, dass sie mich besucht, wenn sie wieder in Deutschland ist, was häufiger der Fall ist, da ihre Schwester in D. wohnt und auch noch in der Nähe von Bonn.

Ansonsten regnet es leicht, kein Wetter zum Radfahren oder spazieren gehen. Auf Museen habe ich auch keine Lust und hast Du eine Kirche gesehen, hast Du alle gesehen. Naja, das ist jetzt etwa übertrieben, aber ganz falsch ist es auch nicht.

Kurz und gut, ich bin jetzt auf dem Schiff Richtung Heimat. Genug gesehen. Der nächste Schritt wäre jetzt gewesen, Konzerte und Ausstellungen zu besuchen, sich einer Wandergruppe anzuschließen, also Kontakte zu knüpfen und tiefer in die Gesellschaft einzusteigen. Aber die Zeit habe ich nicht mehr, so beende ich meinem Urlaub glücklich und zufrieden. Die Eindrücke waren zahlreich und intensiv, die Leute mit denen ich gesprochen habe, waren freundlich und hilfsbereit.

Insgesamt hat mir Cambridge und seine Umgebung sehr gut gefallen, die Vorbehalte, die ich gegen Unistädte habe, habe ich ja beschrieben, sie gelten für alle Orte, an denen Studenten im Vergleich zur Gesamtbevölkerung ein Übergewicht haben. Das tut den Orten nicht gut und den Studenten auch nicht, weil sie dann denken, sie wären der Mittelpunkt der Welt. Sind sie aber nicht.

Auf der anderen Seite sind solche kleineren Unistädte Stätten der Innovation und des Fortschritts. Wann, wenn nicht hier, kann man sich ausprobieren und die Welt auf den Kopf stellen? Die Welt wäre ärmer ohne solche Experimentierfelder.

Also war ich faktisch nur fünf Tage in Cambridge. Aber wenn man den Anreisetag und den Abreisetag dazu zählt kommt, man auch auf 7!

Großes Schiff bringt mich nach Hause. An Bord: Viele Engländer, die Party machen wollen und am Buffet gut essen wollen. Brexit? Interessiert hier niemanden.

4. Ely

And that‘s my photo of the cathedral. The weather today is a little bit gloomy and dull.

And now comrades, what is a „cathedral“? Is the seat of a bishop. So that little town with 20.000 inhabitants is a centre of religious life in the region.

You remember Oliver Cromwell? His life was really exciting and important for the history of England and UK. You can sea more here.

Than I was thinking that one time I have to visit a museum. I was searching and finally happy to find the Ely Museum - but it was closed for renovation.

Ok, ok, ok, that was Ely. In the near is Newmarket. It's a famous centre of horse races and horse breeding.

I know this city because I red all detectiv stories from Dick Franzis (in german). He is an author from more than 40 books and all acting from horses and the most from Newmarket. He was the favourite author from the queen mum, Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon and I think she has an good taste.

After the fizzle with the museum I was a little bit frustrated, so I was searching for a pub. Thank goodness Newmarket is blessed with a pair of good traditionel ones.

Back in Cambridge. In the evening at around 9 o'clock pm. I was one time more in Cambridge City. Many students on the streets, a lot of young people, chinese people eating with sticks in the sushi-bars, the italien snack bar is full, buskers (Straßenmusiker) on the streets, a brawl (Schlägerei) with aggressive young men, cyclists in dark clothes without light on the bikes but in high speed, all this in the few, narrow streets - all this ingredients of a vital life in a city of students (m/w/d). I have enough from this kind of life after 3 days. I miss the children, the old people, the workers, the normal folks. I feel me better in the countryside or in a big city. Perhaps it's very easy: I'm too old for this. It's not my habitat any more.

3. Grantchester

Was für ein wunderschöner Tag! Das Wetter meint es gut mit mir. Sonnig und kalt, aber nicht windig. Heute möchte ich Grantchester besuchen. Ein kleiner Ort im Südwesten von Cambridge, also in Cambridgshire, wie die Region heißt. Mit dem Fahrrad von mir aus ca. 10 km, also gut machbar.

Langsam lerne ich die Abkürzungen in die Stadt kennen. Blick von "meiner" Fahrradbrücke.

Das ist sie. Eine Brücke nur für Radfahrer und Fußgänger. Ja, so etwas gibt es! Ginge auch über andere Flüsse oder Straßenkreuzungen.

Busbahn

Hier mußte ich zweimal hinschauen. Ich fahre gerade über die Brücke, da sehe ich unter mir eine Bahn lang fahren. Ich schaue genauer hin und stelle fest, die Bahn ist ein Bus! Fährt wie auf Schienen. Keine schlechte Idee! Schnelle Realisierung ist auf so einer Strecke möglich, viel schneller als wenn Schienen verlegt werden müßten. Und der Bus kommt flott voran.

Sieht gut aus! Aber mehr als einen Pub am Tag schaffe ich nicht.

Wenn ich einmal reich wär' ...

Habe gelesen, dass Grantchester prozentual der Ort mit den meisten Millionäre in England ist. Ruhige, beschauliche, landschaftlich wunderschöne Gegend, ausgesprochen nette Pubs, Cambridge 10 min. mit dem Auto weg - hier dürfte der eine oder andere Spitzenforscher oder Collegepräsident wohnen.

Es gibt mehrere, sehr nett anzuschauende Pubs in Grantchester. Ich habe beim Lunch für dieses entschieden und das war definitiv kein Fehler!

2. Stadtführung

Today it’s cold, 2 or 3 C° and the sun is shining. The sky is  clear, the air is fresh, a wonderful day.

The city of Cambridge is not so big, two mainstreets in the historic center, that’s is it essentially. But here and in the sidestreets are many shops, cafes, restaurants and venerables pubs so you have to show and explore a lot of things.

And of course two big parks in the middle of the town. Generous and well-groomed green areas. Wonderful! Last but not least the river cam who calm and gracefully crosses the town.

A lot of students are on the streets and many, many chinese tourists. I estimate that the half of all people on the streets are chinese.

In the punters, it‘s winter and cold! are only chinamen.

I mean we have January. I don‘t knew that Cambridge is so an importent target for tourists.

Barbara, our lovely guide, begins with a joke. Attention for BBC! That means Bikes, Bollards and Cars. The streets are small and the traffic is intensive, with the bikes too. Than she explains the history of Cambridge, of the university and of the colleges. We can visit two colleges, first the Queens‘ College. So my comrades, and why is written „Queens’“ and not „Queen’s“?

Because there were two queens who fouded this college so you have to use the plural and that is Queens‘ College.

Than the impressive, gigantic King‘s College. The Colleges were founded to qualify churchmen so every college has his own church or chapel. And the King’s has a big one with an famous chor until now.

After two hours the tour ends. Very good, very interesting, I have understanded perhaps 75%. Not so bad for me.

I eat lunch in one of the nice, old pubs, fish and chips of course with a big lager beer and be very satisfied.
